Bookshelf Styling

Happy Monday!  Who is ready for a house update??

Of all the things I have done to my new house, my built-in bookshelves are by far my favorite addition.  My living room and dining room are one big room and I really wanted to try and separate the living space from the dining space.  I also felt like the fireplace looked very lonely on a wall by itself.  The bookshelves have added so much character and charm to the house.

Getting a mantle built is my next project…

Now, back to my shelves.  Built-in book shelves are wonderful, but then you also have to have things to put on them.  What is a girl to do when she needs a little inspiration?? Pinterest of course.  I found some great tips from websites and other bloggers on styling bookshelves. Here are a few of my favorites

Love everything about this house

12. habituallychic book shelves new apt

Love the color coordination of the books on these shelves

Love the blue and white jars!

Some tips I picked up along the way:

1. Stack books both vertically and horizontally.  This creates a different dimension on the shelf and also takes up more room incase you don’t have a ton of books.

2. Go to Goodwill and get old books.  I went and bought about 20 books for a dollar or 50 cents a piece. Some were good finds and others I just took the covers off so they looked pretty.

3.  Don’t be afraid to add bowls, picture frames, etc.

4.  Stacking books by color create a much more dramatic look but also brings color to a room.

5.  Paint or use wallpaper on the back of shelves to bring out color in a room.  (this is on my list of projects as well)

My couch arrived yesterday and things are starting to feel like they are coming together!  More to come 🙂

The Container Store Grand Opening in Tampa

We have some exciting news down here in Tampa!  Today is the grand opening of The Container Store.  How perfect that right when I move into a new house, this store opens 10 minutes from me??  I am totally guilty of color coordinating my closet.  From my hanging clothes to my folded shirts and sweaters… it’s kind of a problem. So as you could guess, I am so excited to head over to the store and check it out!  The store is located by International Mall at Westshore Blvd and Spruce St.

As an extra bonus, this weekend 10% of Grande Opening Weekend sales are being donated to the Junior League of Tampa.  I had to miss our preview party Thursday night because of a work event, but it looked like so much fun.

I have been to the store in Dallas at South Lake Town Center.  Literally, if you have an organization project or dilemma, this is the place to go.  No Container Store near you?  Check out their website for all their products and also good organization tips!

A few products I have on my radar…

These canisters for any bathroom or bedroom $7.99-16.99

Cleaning Caddy and Bucket $5.99-9.99

This will help eliminate clutter underneath a sink and help you keep all your supplies in one place.  I saw a tip in the most recent HGTV magazine about keeping a cleaning supply kit downstairs and upstairs..makes so much sense!

Shoe organization.  I am sure there are many other females out there that share this frustration.  I never have anywhere to put my shoes.  Right now I am using a shelf and an over the door shoe holder.  I think both of these options are great.  Keep your in season shoes on the shelf and store out of season shoes in this under-the-bed container.

12 Shoe Shelf– $39.99

16-Shoe Under the Bed Organizer- $19.99

UnderbedShoe600px_10058558Love this idea for a power cord.  I hate when I have 5 different things plugged in and you can see it on the floor… this is a great solution!

Cable Box with Power Strip– $19.99

Hide Papers, old magazines, pamphlet’s etc in these cute magazine files.  Great way to decorate a bookshelf and also hide clutter!

Bright Stockholm– $9.99 each

Blossom Stockholm Magazine File– $10.99 each

Synchronicity Stockholm Magazine File– $7.99 EachStockholmMagazineFileSynchronicity_x

March Maddness: How to Show School Spirit at Work

For most women, basketball is not a big deal but, when your whole family graduated from Indiana, you become a little obsessed with March Madness!

Yesterday, most conference tournaments started and during my lunch break I was constantly checking my ESPN app for score updates. I began contemplating what I was going to wear to work on Friday to support Indiana in the Big Ten Tournament. I then realized that just because Indiana plays at Noon, does not mean I can’t wear a fashionable, work appropriate outfit that shows a little school spirit!

Now, usually I would be sitting on my couch in an IU Sweatshirt, yelling at the TV (as if the players could actually hear me). We all know that outfit would not go over very well with the bosses. So, here are some great, colorful finds to support your college basketball teams while you are working!

House Updates!

You know when you first move into a new house/apt/etc and everyone tells you, “You have to be patient” “It will take a lot of time to decorate you house”??  Guess what?  They are right.  I definitely had some priorities when I moved in.  I wanted to find a comfortable natural rug for the living room, order two upholstered chairs, get my built-in bookshelves finished and find an armoir for my bedroom.

I am happy to report those have all been accomplished.  I am waiting for my chairs (will be delivered in April) to do a lot of the “decor” in my living room because I want to see what the color looks like when I get them in.  This is the chair and fabric I chose..

I went with the Larkin Swivel Chair from Ballard Designs

in Arden Blue

I have been carrying the swatch around in my purse with me (this is what my life is coming to) so I can use it to match other things I see.

I ended up going with the Chunky Wool and Natural Jute rug from Pottery Barn.  I love the look and durability of a natual fiber rug, but I wanted to find one that was comfy and not rough on your feet.  I think this rug is the perfect combination!

This is not a great picture, but here is what the rug looks like in the room

Last Friday, my carpenter finished the doors on my bookshelves and they look great!  I am so please with them.  It is amazing what a difference they made to the room.

(Sidenote:  I am working on getting more things to put on my shelves 🙂

I also bought a mirror to go over my chest at the end of the dining room.  One thing I have heard over and over is that a big mirror can make a room feel much bigger.  I have the smaller version of this mirror (pictured on my bookshelf) and decided to get the larger one too.  I love this mirror, it really makes a difference in the room!

Find the mirror at Ballard Designs!  Link here

I promise to keep the updates coming!  I am currently looking for a round coffee table, bedroom dresser, hang my chandeliers and try to figure out what to do in my office.

My grandparents are coming to Tampa Saturday to see my new house and I know my Nana will give me lots of good tips!

Have a great day!

Oscars Best Dressed

I am going to go ahead and apologize for my lack of posting recently!  I finally moved into my new house on Friday and these past couple of weeks have been crazy.  Moving didn’t go quite as planned, but it never does right?  After a few hiccups and multiple items not fitting up my stairs, I am all settled in.  There is still plenty of unpacking to do, but all the important things have found their place.

Here are a few shots from the day.  I got my built in bookshelves done early last week and I love them!  I am still waiting for the doors to be put on and then they will be complete.  I will post more pictures soon I promise!

My living room/dining room!

New bedding from Pottery Barn…getting into bed that night never felt so good.

Beautiful tulips arrived from my sweet sister!  These put the biggest smile on my face, thanks Sally 🙂

Saturday night I was invited to the Coronation Ball in Tampa.  This is a black tie event for the Gasparilla court.  The event was at the convention center and was so much fun.  I ended up renting two dresses from Rent the Runway and will do a review soon!

Last night, I finally relaxed on my couch and watched the Oscars.  Well, I mostly watched the red carpet and then went to bed, but thats the best part right??

Happy Happy Birthday!!!

I want to wish a VERY VERY Happy Birthday to Molly, the best sister anyone could ask for!! I am so lucky to have a sister like Molly, one that I can call at any time of the day to talk about anything and everything! I am so thankful for her and so proud of her for everything she has accomplished!!!

Coffee Table Styling

I received a 15% off coupon from Anthropologie the other day for my birthday and knew exactly what I wanted to buy with it.  Some great books for my coffee table.  I love looking at the books in Anthropologie.  They have a huge Paris collection right now and they all make you want to cozy up on your couch with a croissant.

I know I should be concentrating on buying important things like rugs, chairs, wall decor, but I am taking a little break from upholstery to talk about something fun: my coffee table.

I have learned from the blog world and Pinterest that styling your coffee table is actually a more thoughtful process than I had imagined.  Check out this how-to from The Everygirl (one of my favorites).  They have some great tips on there like how to add color, the importance of having something green, having a statement piece, etc.

Some inspiration….

So, to begin my journey to the perfect coffee table I need the perfect books right??

I bought Domino as my first one.  I am not going to lie, I bought the book mostly for the cute cover, but it does have a lot of great tips!

On my wish list:

I have been lusting after this book ever since my best friend Christie got it for Christmas 2 years ago…yes I remember when she got it 🙂
